A NEVER-before-seen letter from Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain to his then-wife Courtney Love, written as the doomed rock star was hallucinating on LSD in a British hotel, provides a fascinating insight into the twisted mind of the grunge genius.
The undated two-page letter, scrawled in black ballpoint on lined 8 x 11-inch paper, is headed "Courtney Love Breakfast Fax" and was written by Cobain while he was on tour with Nirvana in the U.K. in November 1991. He asked a receptionist at the Sheffield Hotel to fax it to Love for him, and when the receptionist asked Cobain what she should do with the original, he said she could keep it as a souvenir. The letter is part of a sale of rock 'n' roll memorobilia scheduled at Christie's on Dec. 17, and is estimated to fetch between $12,000 and $14,000.
The letter, seen exclusively by PAGE SIX's Tom Sykes, begins with Cobain describing his acid trip — "Out of all the times I've been on acid, I've never been able to hallucinate with such repetitive control," he writes. "I'm hallucinating at will, over and over again in this English shoebox with pastel curtains and normal little victorian [sic] lamps and drawers. It's all too normal and impossible to explain."
As Cobain continues to describe his trip, he adds, "I'm not very drunk. It's like controlled bedspins and I'm the exorcist."
The letter becomes increasingly bizarre as Cobain continues, "I really do care but I'm not very convincing. He's sad. I'm sad. My throat is a swollen tumor, Blood sausage — colon. I puke air after coughing. It was morning by the time I fell asleep after talking to you. 200 lbs. I thought of a great idea for our video. Oh forget it."
Cobain concludes, "Well, gotta go, I have a crusade to run. We watched top of the pops tonight, [bleep]ing brilliant, Love Kurd."
The mention of the British show "Top of the Pops" refers to Nirvana's appearance on the program when Cobain and fellow band members Dave Grohl and Chris Novoselic mocked the tradition of lip-synching on the broadcast. Novoselic constantly threw his bass into the air, and as the song drew to a close the musicians smashed their instruments as the music played on.
Cobain killed himself less than three years later on April 5, 1994.
