Witness tells of 'vicious,' 'erratic' Courtney Love

LOS ANGELES - A musician testified Wednesday that Courtney Love dumped whiskey on her, threw the bottle at her head, pulled her hair, dug her nails into her arm, pinched her breast and slapped her.

Kristin King told Superior Court Commissioner Sanjay T. Kumar that she had been asleep on a couch in the Los Angeles home of Love's ex-boyfriend until shortly before the singer-actress confronted her the morning of April 25.

The commissioner is expected to determine later this afternoon whether to order Love, 40, to stand trial on a charge of felony assault with a deadly weapon.

King, the prosecution's first witness, said she heard Love yelling outside before she "stormed through the house" when her former boyfriend, Jim Barber, opened the door. She said she heard the two arguing before Love noticed her on the living room couch.

"(She) picked up a (Johnnie Walker) Red Label bottle of whiskey and dumped it all over me," King testified, adding that Love told her to leave and cursed her. "She threw the bottle at the left side of my face. She picked up a big candle that was lit and threw it at the back of my head."

The woman testified that Love then sat on her, pulled her hair, dug her nails into her arm -- which is now scarred -- and grabbed her left breast in the "worst pinch I ever had."

"I was like `Get off me and she slapped me across the mouth," King told the commissioner. "He (Barber) went to pull her away and she responded, `What, are you going to protect her?"'

King said Love appeared "very aggressive, angry, just vicious, erratic." The witness said she was unable at first to get away because she was "pinned down."

"I was sort of in a fetal position trying to protect myself from being hit," she said. "I was just saying, `Get off me, get off me. There's no reason for this ... Stop."'

King said she was "able to get out from her grip" and grabbed a cellular phone from the coffee table and ran out the front door to call police.

"She came chasing outside. She ran outside after me ... and grabbed the phone out of my hand," the woman testified.

King said she told Love that she was calling the police, and that Love told her, "Go ahead. I'll say you were never here," then went back inside the house and slammed the door.

King said the attack left her with bruises, nail marks and a little bump on the back of her head. She said she noticed within a few days that her front tooth was chipped where she had been slapped.

Howard Weitzman, one of Love's attorneys, planned to cross-examine King this afternoon.

Weitzman wanted to skip the hearing and go straight to trial. But the preliminary hearing went on as scheduled after Deputy District Attorney Gina Satriano opposed the defense request, as she had in Love's pending felony drug case.

Love, free on $150,000 bail in connection with the alleged assault, is awaiting trial in Beverly Hills on two counts of felony drug possession.

Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain's widow pleaded guilty May 25 in a third case to a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence and was sentenced to a drug rehabilitation program.

LOS ANGELES - Singer Courtney Love has been ordered to stand trial on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon despite her attorney's claim the case had been "grossly overcharged."

Superior Court Commissioner Sanjay Kumar on Wednesday listened to testimony from the alleged victim, Kristin King, and a neighbor in the area of the April 25 incident.


"There is uncontroverted evidence that without provocation the defendant threw a bottle at the victim and chased her with a flashlight," he said.


Love was ordered to appear for arraignment Nov. 10. She remained free on $150,000 bail.


"We hope this will be resolved in a way to allow her to move on with her life," defense attorney Howard Weitzman said outside court.


The case is part of a long string of legal troubles for Love, former lead singer for the group Hole and widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.


Despite the legal setback, Weitzman said Love's well-publicized drug problems were behind her. "She couldn't be in any better shape than she is now. Things are looking better and better for Courtney," he said.


King testified Love came to the home of former boyfriend Jim Barber and found King asleep on a sofa. She said Love grabbed a liquor bottle and threw it at her head, threw a lit candle and pinched her breasts.


Neighbor Marilyn Corre testified she was awakened by yelling and crying.


"Then I saw another woman come charging out," she testified. "She had in her hand an extremely large torch (flashlight), silver in color. ... It was being used like a weapon."


Weitzman urged that the charge be reduced to a misdemeanor. He said the case was a situation of "she said, she said" and that the account given by the victim might not be completely truthful.


Prosecutor Gina Satriano said it was clear Love intended to cause great bodily injury and even if she did not cause the injuries, the intent supported the charge.

I feel horrible after hearing the story in more detail. That is really disgusting and I feel so bad for Kristen King that she went through that. But of course the fans are gonna think shes innocent and all because she writes good music. The fact is she can write music but she is a DISGUSTING human being. Get your priorites fixed. There is a diffrence between being a good musician and being a good music.You can say "I LOVE HER MUSIC" and get away with it thats reasonable no reason not to I suppose, but saying "I LOVE HER" is completey different.

Courtneys lucky that the candle she threw at her didn't catch with the hard liquor and light up Kristen on fire, and possible burn her to death.

I Know the truth about C.L. & she doesnt want yo to hear it all! Fact is, She is guilty of causing serious harm to many, espec. to those who she wants out of her way. A fact is, She had tried to kill me more than one time & kidnapped me & attempted to have me killed. Id say Im only alive by miracle & she is quite lucky of how I was so mentally & physically traumatized by her numerous cruelties, that I had actually lost my memory for nearly 10yrs & during that time I didnt even know my past self so thats why I couldnt have of talked about all the knowledge I had known. but it was stuck in there, in me, but hidden ways back in my traumatized brain. Oh, btw she does not know how to write music & it was all due to Kurt teaching her how to be everything rock & roll & he wrote & gave the lyrics for her to use. i believe he sort of got off on his being able to make her into something cool at that time. however later on it was due to her demands on him to cont. writing music for her. Fame, she strongly desired at any cost during those early days. (& yep,she got the fame afterall , didnt she) Kurt wrote lyrics & helped to create her style. some of it was by the use of copying others (unknown musicians at the time) & with him using his muse(not C.L.) also a part of C.L's musical singing style, which was created from being copied off of mia Zapata of"The Gits.
Y'all, C.L. is a phony & shes a scary individual. thats from my own real knowledge of my experiences dealing with her back when. alot of the scene was full of real twisted "f-heads". I will give C.L. credit for literally having balls!
