A long time ago, before man began to dominate the world, the goddess of horses looked down upon the earth and saw what was to come. She was sad for her beasts, for they would be mastered by the humaniods as if they were unintelligent and stupid. To prepare her race for this coming future, the goddess pulled from the sea an island, secret from the rest of the world. Upon it she grew plants and forests, encouraging birds to come nest and small animals to make their homes there. Once the island was big enough, the goddess named the island after her mortal name; Deirdre. Then she brought to the safe haven seven equines, three male, and four female. She bid them to do as they would upon the island, but to remember to always be thankful for the gift she had given them. All seven of the equines were shaman from various herds around the globe. They got along well, and gave great thanks to their goddess for what she had given them.
Eventually they paired off, until there was just one female left. She claimed chaise from males and deticated her life to their goddess. As the six other 'quines decided to form their own families, they turned to her as their advisor. The island was at peace for the first couple of years, until the children of the six shaman grew restless and wished that there was more equines upon the island. The seventh shaman asked their kind goddess to bring more horses to the island, and she complied. Soon each family had more than ten members, with smaller families branching off from the original three pairs.
The time came to pass, though, when the great great grandfoals of the shaman no longer believed in their gracious goddess, for she had not spoken to them. In fact, as the generation went on, they lost the ability to channel her and hear her voice. When the first six shaman died, there was an uproar as to who was to lead. The family of the shaman Gentia and her mate Cloud tore themselves from the other families, saying they were the only ones true to their faith. Dubbed the Gentia Alliance in their great mother's honor, they moved to one side of the herdlands. Outraged at the split, the foals of Morose and Vulpix despised their brethern, and told the foals of Indifferon and Gnay-Niy that they should join them. The Indifferon Alliance (as they came to be known) did not want to take the side of either the Gentia or the Morose. They stayed in the original herdlands, and watched with sadness as the bitter Morose Alliance moved to the western side of the valley. The argument would not end there though, and the two opposite Alliances often clashed over the shared wandering lands. Their hatred for each other did not stop over the next two generations, and the island was at war.
The last remaining shaman, Nyssa, watched with sadness. Eventually even the foals of Indifferon were pulled into the battle. Something had to be done. Praying to Deirdre for strength, Nyssa used her shaman magic to separate the valley into three equal parts. In the west she raised a volcano for the Morose, in the east she raised a platform for the Gentia, and in the middle she cleared the land for the Indifferon. She bade the Kings and Queens of each alliance go to their lands and stay there, lest she decide to bury them in their strife. Obedient to the last shaman, they retreated to their new homes. Disappointed with her children, the goddess Deirdre gave her last shaman extra long life, so that she might seek out an apprentice to train in the ways of worship. So, to this day she remains, guarding the other three alliances against war, and searching for the next shaman in the line.
