Rocker Courtney Love, accused of attacking a woman with a liquor bottle, pleaded not guilty to one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon Wednesday in a Los Angeles courtroom.
Love, 40, allegedly threw a bottle of Johnny Walker Red Label at singer Kristin King on April 25 after finding her asleep on the couch in the home of Jim Barber, Love's former boyfriend and manager.
Superior Court Judge Terry Green ordered Love to return Dec. 15 for a trial setting. She remains free on $150,000 bail.
King testified at an Oct. 27 hearing that Love picked up a "bottle of whiskey and dumped it all over me,'' told her to leave, and cursed at her.
"She threw the bottle at the left side of my face," King said. "She picked up a big candle that was lit and threw it at the back of my head.''
King testified that Love sat on her, pulled her hair, dug her nails into her arm, slapped her mouth and grabbed her left breast in the "worst pinch I ever had."
A neighbor corroborated that the yelling and screaming in the early morning hours woke her up and she saw Love chase King with a metal flashlight.
King claimed the attack left her with bruises, nail marks, a bump on the back of her head and a chipped tooth.
Love's attorney alleged that King may have been drunk and that his client had been "grossly overcharged," but the judge at that hearing said there was sufficient cause to order Love to stand trial.
Love also faces trial for two counts of felony drug possession stemming from a long night of carousing last fall, which also began with a surprise visit to her former boyfriend's house.
According to reports, police were dispatched to Barber's home at 2:40 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2003, for a possible burglary, and found Love waving to helicopters.
Barber declined to press charges for broken windows, but police arrested the singer, and she was charged with disorderly conduct and being under the influence of opiates and cocaine.
Hours after her release, she called 911 from her own Beverly Hills home, reporting that she may have overdosed.
At a preliminary hearing, a police officer testified that Love gave them a bag of pills containing hydrocodone (a.k.a. Vicodin) and Oxycodone (a.k.a. Oxycontin). Police say she did not possess a prescription for the pills.
Fans may be relieved that the singer has recently traded whiskey and pills for Diet Coke and coffee. Love has reportedly been seen sipping soda onstage during a California tour with her new all-girl band, Chelsea.
Her recent courthouse appearances are also notable for the giant Starbucks in her grip and lack of dramatic antics for the press.
This summer, Love was sentenced to a mandatory six-month rehab program as part of a plea deal that helped her avoid jail on the misdemeanor charge of being under the influence (the count of disorderly conduct was dropped).
Under the conditions of her plea deal, Love must submit to random drug testing and is barred from taking non-prescription drugs, drinking alcohol, and being in places that serve alcohol, except for work-related engagements.
If she fulfills these conditions, the guilty plea will be expunged from her record.
She could face some hard time for this one. Good thing she knows how to throw a punch; if convicted and sent to jail, she'll need it!
