Courtney vs Madonna

Okay, who can answer this for me? What is it with Courtney Love and Madonna? Is there a feud going on between these two or are they friends? Courtney claims Madonna's record company was interested in Hole when they first formed but they went to another record label instead. I keep hearing insinuations about these two but I don't know what the story is. Did they have a fight?

I'm no fan of Madonna's to be honest. Her singing sucks--Courtney's singing is much better believe it or not, her acting sucks and her antics before she had kids were disgusting. (remember when she walked down the road nude in Miami? Eww! And her book back in 1991 called SEX. Fifty bucks a pop, what a waste of money) Now that she's a mom she's calmed down some, thank God, but her latest projects, like the books "The English Roses" are awful and that stupid English accent she's adopted makes me want to smack her. Obviously doing Evita was a good experience for her but her attempts at "respectability" irritate me unbearably because it's just another "reinvention" gimmick.

That being said , what's up with these two?

Hi Hippiechild, I'll give you my take on it. But i'm no fan of Madonna so somebody else might have a better perspective:

I'm not aware that they are currently friends. Both have made derogatory statements about each other publically. But you are right: Maverick (Madonna's record label) was interested in signing Hole before Geffen got them (probably signed up because of Nirvana). Both women are of an opportunistic type so it's comes as no suprise if they didn't get on. Both have momumental egos. Then again, Courtney Love has alienated a lot of people in her time, I mean, whatever happened to her friendship with Drew Barrymore, what of that?

I may be wrong on this but I have heard it said by muso pals that Maverick signed Alannis Morrissette (Jagged Little Pill) shortly after, and Madonna promptly stole her image - or reinvented herself as Morrissette for Ray of Light. Having said that I've always found Love's career about 5 years behind Madonna's and think that if you look at a lot of Love's visual publicity, post surgery, you can see a kind of poor man's Madonna in it, the nudity, a lot of Madonna like shots...

Madonna did what any self-respecting woman with small children should do and toned down her image. She married that English guy, and is trying to bury her past. My English pals tell me that the tabloid press in the UK call her Marge or Madge or something that isn't very respectful... and I understand that the press over there can be more vicious that the press over here in the US. They probably would have ripped Courtney Love to shreds by now, but Courtney was never big over there... grunge was a post-punk thing coming out of Seattle and I think that they had moved on musically since the days of the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie & the Banshees, etc. In NYC, we had Lydia Lunch, Diamanda Galas, Patti Smith, etc. I mean that whole bullsh*t about Courtney Love having revolutionized women in rock is just phoney crap that she puts out, so that misinformed extremely gullible high school girls will swallow it... Then they spout it and just look like ignorant fools. But i'm digressing.

Madonna, reminds me of the Mafia; Starts out using whatever means possible, reaches a pinnacle and then strives for respectability. Apart from Madonna's music + image not being my bag, I don't find her offensive since I don't read about her overdosing infront of her kids, or trying to punch air hostesses in the face. If she's tried to pull any divaesque manipulations on the media it's been done with more aplomb since she doesn't have the backlash that Courtney has. What can I say? Axxx

As a person, I don't really care for Madonna but she's got some cool songs and she knows how to use the media to her advantage. Unlike Courtney who can't think of anything that goes beyond getting f**ked up and getting her tits out.
