Years ago, I read Nancy Spungeons biography "And I Don't Want To Live This Life" by Deborah Spungeon, Nancy's mother. It gave me a very different perspective on Nancy Spungeon than the one we get from the Tabloid Newspapers. Apparantly, Nancy was a schizoprenic and wasn't diagnosed until she was 17. She had gone through all kinds of counseling, as did her parents, and in the end the system blamed the parents for Nancy's behavior. It was a pretty sad story.
The reason why I'm asking is because Courtney Love seems to be pretty obsessed with Nancy Spungeon ever since she played 'Gretchen' in Sid and Nancy. Kurt and Courtney are often portrayed as rocks modern day 'Sid and Nancy'. I've noticed in several pictures posted of her that she frequently dresses like Nancy Spungeon, right down to the hair and lipstick. Of course, Nancy died when she was 20 and Courtney lives on. Nancy always said that she was going to die before she turned 21 (according to Deborah Spungeon in the biography). Because of this, I'd swear Courtney is picking up where Nancy left off.
What does this forum think of this comparision?

courtneys mum also thought this, so do i. i really like tham both tho, so i see it as positive.

People often say that Kurt and Courtney are like Sid and Nancy but I think thats pretty cruel. Although I love the Sex Pistols Sid wasen't a great songwriter and Nancy couldn't string two words together. I think Courtney is attracted to Nancy because of the pain Nancy went through plus Courtney is attracted to the tortured females because she thinks she can redeem it.
Kurt would have hated these comparisions and I think they are used to attack Courtney because most Sex Pistol fans hold Nancy responsible for Sids heroin addiction and thus death. I don't think Nancy is a good role model. There is nothing special about going to Britain and getting in bed with a rockstar. That's nuts!
The mythical counterpart that follows Kurt and Courtney and Sid and Nancy is also based around who killed who. Suicde pact, murder-sound familiar? I will say this though Courtney was far more interesting when she was trying to be Nancy. Is the biography really good? I've always wanted to read it. Actually Kurt said Courtney reminded him of Nancy. There is a difference. I doubt Kurt wanted a groupie girlfriend. Even if Kurt did want a Nancy style girlfriend that was probabley more about him wanting to find a mate he had stuff in common with [ie punk]. What Kurt stated to biographer Michael Azzarad that he really wanted someone he could spend a long time with that loved music as much as he did. I don't know if he found that in Courtney but then again I'm not sure what Sid found in Nancy either.

Last night I watched a documentary about the Sex Pistols called "The Filth and the Fury" about how the band formed and the history of their rise and fall. There was some footage with Nancy Spungeon in it and it wasn't very flattering. One seen in particular that bothered me was when she and Sid were being interviewed; both were lying down obviously wasted on heroin and Sid kept nodding off. Nancy kept poking him to wake him up and when that didn't work she took an inhaler and forced him to breath through it to arouse him. It was pretty pathetic.
When I read the biography, the Nancy described in the book was a highly intelligent girl; scholastically she was well ahead of her classmates and graduated from high school at age 16. She read poetry by Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings (sp?) and her IQ was well above average. This woman was nothing like that. She was whiny, self-indulgent, and basically very annoying. All her intelligence was thrown away in place of heroin and other drugs and she looked pasty, bloated and sick. It was obvious neither one of them were long for this world. What a waste of two lives.
What bothers me is why would Courtney want to model herself after such a pathetic creature? There is nothing glamorous about Nancy Spungeon. She was obviously a very sick woman; diagnosed as a schizophrenic at age 17 and spent her life following rock groups, hoping to achieve her early death that she longed for. Furthermore, the resemblance between the two women is frightening. Even the voices are similar, kind of nasally and a bit whiny. Courtney seems to want to pick up where Nancy left off and make sure that "Nancy" finally succeeds in becoming someone other than a rock stars wife/girlfriend. I'm left to question why; why would she pick Nancy Spungeon of all people to emulate?
I'll say this much; Chloe Webb was totally miscast in the movie Sid and Nancy. It should have gone to Courtney; she would have filled the role perfectly.

i saw the larry flynt vs. the people movie and i noticed how well courtney fit the role. she didn't even have to act.

Okay, how is Courtney a 'goddess'? What has she done to elevate herself to goddess level? She's a musician with a history of drugs, violence and indecent exposure; that's your goddess? Have I missed something? Has she created world peace? Has she discovered the cure for cancer or other life-threatening diseases? Is she "Courtney of Calcutta" working to ease the sufferings of the poor and sick? Has she done one single thing that can be considered selfless, generous or kind? Did she create the world in 7 days, part the water to the red sea, crucify herself and rose from the dead in three days? Please, do enlighten me. Let me just add that YOU NEED HELP. Your ramblings are that of a person heavily under the influence of some kind of intoxicant and you make no sense whatsoever. Get thee to a mental health clinic and get an evaluation. Sheesh!  |
